Ethan Horvath stepped right into Luton Town’s starting lineup for Saturday’s EFL Championship opener and walked away with his first clean sheet of the new season.
Horvath registered three saves in Luton’s goalless draw with Birmingham City, impressing immediately in Nathan Jones’ squad. The Nottingham Forest loanee was tested early by the visiting Blues, denying Maxime Colin and Przemyslaw Placheta in the first half. Placheta was also repelled for a second time in the second half as Horvath went neck-and-neck with Birmingham City goalkeeper John Ruddy for Man of the Match honors.
The 27-year-old Horvath now moves forward to face Burnley at Turf Moor on August 6 before EFL Cup action against Newport County on Aug. 9.
Also in England, Zack Steffen made his competitive debut for Middlesbrough helping Chris Wilder’s squad earn one point against West Brom. Duane Holmes logged 59 minutes in Huddersfield’s 1-0 loss to Burnley while Lynden Gooch assisted once for Sunderland.
In Germany, Pellegrino Matarazzo’s Stuttgart advanced in the German Cup competition. Timothy Tillman logged 90 minutes in Greuther Furth’s 2-0 road loss to Stuttgarter Kickers.
In Scotland, Cameron Carter-Vickers helped Celtic pick up three points on opening day in the Premiership. Dante Polvara also logged 90 minutes for Aberdeen in a 2-0 loss to Celtic.
In Belgium, Sam Vines assisted on Royal Antwerp’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Zulte Waregem.
